Three children die of infectious intestinal disease in east China
------------------------------------------------------------------
East China's Fujian Province reported 113 cases of infectious
intestinal disease this month [October 2008] and 3 children were
confirmed to have died of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD).

All the cases were reported in Jian'ou City from [1 Oct 2008] to [17
Oct 2008], said Wang Xiying, an official with the provincial health department.

The 3 victims, 2 boys and a girl, were below one year of age, the
spokesman said. They were from different towns of the city, she said.

Among the infected, 22 were still under treatment in hospital and 29
others under medical observation, she added.

Wang said the disease was reported sporadically and the patients
remain in stable conditions, without specifying any further details.

Experts said the disease was still epidemic in some parts of Fujian
and warned the public to seek immediate medical treatment when
symptoms occurred.

The provincial government has dispatched 8 epidemic prevention
experts to the Jian'ou city to assist local medical staffs in their
citywide medical checks on infants and children.

Ward beds and testing equipments have been added to meet the needs of
the patients. Local disease prevention staff are ordered to regularly
inspect kindergartens, schools, and residential communities to
prevent the epidemic from spreading.

HFMD can be caused by a host of intestinal viruses, but EV71 and the
coxsackie virus (Cox A16) are the most common. It usually starts with
a slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and
rashes on the hands and feet. It can also lead to meningitis,
encephalitis, pulmonary edema, and paralysis in some children. There
is no vaccine.

There was a HFMD outbreak in parts of south China in the spring
[2008]. In Fuyang, Anhui Province, the worst hit area, 22 children
died of intestinal virus clinically diagnosed as EV71, alongside tens
of thousands of infections.

[The eastern Fujian province has reported 113 cases and 3 deaths
attributable to hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD). Multiple outbreaks of
HFMD had occurred in China since April 2008 and the outbreak peaked
in May 2008.

However, Fujian province did not report the HFMD cases although its
neighbouring provinces, Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces, had detected
HFMD cases and deaths during that period of epidemic. There had been
113 cases reported from Yunnan province, 169 cases, and 1 death from
Guangxi province (see prior PRO/MBDS postings listed below).

During July 2008, a new outbreak of HFMD with several fatal cases was
reported from Tangshan city in Hebei province. However, the total
number of cases and deaths detected were not specified (see prior
PRO/MBDS posting Hand, foot & mouth disease - China (13): Hebei,
Jilin, RFI 20080729.2315).

All of the PRO/MBDS reports on the HFMD situation in China this year
have been based on newswire reports. In a report posted on 11 Jun
2008, there was mention of approximately 176 000 cases reported
nationwide during the month of May 2008 and the conclusion that the
nationwide epidemic had peaked in mid-May 2008 (see Hand, foot &
mouth disease - China (11) 20080611.1844). In one of the earlier
reports, there was mention of 44 deaths nationwide, but official
confirmation of the actual numbers of cases and deaths reported thus
far this year was unavailable through usual internet searches of the
Ministry of Health website. In May 2008, the most severely affected
provinces included Guangdong, Zhejiang, Hebei, Shandong, and Hunan
(see Hand, foot & mouth disease - China (11) 20080611.1844 for more
details). In July [2008], Jilin province was the most severely
affected. This current report suggests that the nationwide epidemic
is continuing, with Fujian province presently the most severely
affected. Most reports have mentioned the identification of EV71 as
the predominant virus responsible for the outbreak this year -- a
virus that has been associated with more severe disease and
fatalities, consistent with what has been reported from China this
year. More information on the status of HFMD in China this year from
knowledgeable sources would be appreciated.

Fujian province is located on the southeast coast of China and it
borders Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west, and Guangdong to the south.
